An important meeting within the framework of War Free World Heritage Listed Cities project was hosted by the Municipality of Mtskheta on March the 25th, at the Mtskheta Palace Hotel. Key Georgian authorities as well as experts on culture heritage gathered to discuss main steps forward for a better protection of cultural heritage from armed conflicts. This project funded by the European Union through the worldwide programme CIUDAD.
The War Free World Heritage Listed Cities project aims at establishing good practices for urban and site management in cities threatened by armed conflicts, and to prepare candidacy applications for Mtskheta (Georgia) and Byblos (Lebanon) for Enhanced Protection from UNESCO.
This thirty months project is carried out in a partnership led by the Council of United Municipalities of Byblos (Lebanon), with the Municipality of Mtskheta (Georgia), the World Association for the Protection of Tangible, and Intangible Cultural Heritage WATCH (Italy). It will be also associated with Friends of Cultural Heritage FOCUH (Turkey) and Network for Advanced Restoration NEREA (Italy).
The meeting held in Mtskheta is part of a series of initiatives promoted in order to involve relevant authorities, and public entities in Georgia. The project aims also to form a core national group of experts, which will study "Risk Mitigation Measures" and will design a "Risk Preparedness Plan". By adopting these two documents, Georgia would be compliant with Second Protocol of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Properties in times of armed conflicts.
Georgia and the international community combine their effort to protect the cultural heritage from the consequences of conflicts
