The Greatest event-Svetitskhovloba was celebrated on the 14-th of October.Catholicos-Patriarch-Ilia the 2-nd conducted public prayer dedicated to this very day.
Official delegations from different countries , including The representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church visited Georgia.
Great amount of special events were performed in the streets of the ancient capital. Specimens of Georgian folk craft –ceramic, graphic ,silver, enamel, wool, pictures and books from the oldest library were represented.
Local ensembles performed specimens of Georgian Folk dancing and singing. Exhibitions ,dedicated to the Autumn season were held on the initiative of Public Schools of Mtskheta –Mtianeti Region( Dusheti,Tianeti,Kazbegi).Competitions in different kind of sport accompanied the day. Students competed each other in Georgian Wrestling, Hand ball, Karate, Boxing, Mini Football, Chess Playing, Kind of ancient Georgian Wrestling- Khridoli and others.
Presentation of the book “Mtskheta Historical-Archaeological Guide” and the film “Svetitskhoveli – Importance of the Cathedral According to the New Generation “was held in the Archaeological Museum of Mtskheta. Visitors were served with the Georgian Cuisine.
Gala concert began on the central square at 4 o’clock , where the famous Georgian singers took part, but the greatest concert was held in front of the cathedral Svetitskhoveli, attended by the Patriarch – Ilia the2-nd,President-Mikheil Saakashvili and invited guests.
Mtskhetoba or Svetitskhovloba is the greatest celebration for Georgians, as it is connected to the greatest relic in Georgia-The Christ’s Robe. It is always celebrated in the cathedral Svetitskhoveli, on the 14-th of October. The day is established by the Georgian Orthodox Church.
Historically, the special service is conducted in the Cathedral attending by the greatest number of worshippers, scarifying different kind of things. After the service believers made a feast in the fortification, around the cathedral. After the restoration of the Georgian independence (1999)the tradition of Mtskhetoba celebration was also restored and it is the day off. As we have already mentioned the service is usually conducted by The Patriarch . All day long people are allowed to walk in the streets of Mtskheta and watch different kind of competitions.
