On April 6, under the direction of the Board and Assembly of Dusheti Municipality, the Bulachauri village irrigation canal was cleaned. The funding for the project was provided from money allocated by “Village Assistance Program” . The repair of the irrigation canal allowed approximately 350 hectares of land to be irrigated and cultivated. Besides the village of Bulachauri, the irrigation canal will be used by two more villages, Abanoskhevi and Kubriaantkari. In Bulachauri the irrigation canal was dysfunctional for 10 -15 years and severely limited the ability of the population, who relied on agriculture for their living, to produce an acceptable harvest. The irrigation canal renovation project will be finished in a short period of time enabling villagers to better cultivate their land and greatly improve production. The renovation project was supervised by Caesar Chocheli, the President’s representative in Mtskheta- Mtianeti Region as well as Zurab Otiashvili, the head of Dusheti Municipality and other representatives.
Renovation of the irrigation canal in the village of Bulachauri
On April, 2009, the 11th International Tourist exhibition CTF2009 was organized by the exhibition center “Expo-Georgia”. The exhibition was held with the support of Tbilisi City Hall, the state department of tourism and resorts of Georgia, the agency of the protected territories of Georgia, the Georgia tourism association, and the German Society for Technical Cooperation - GTZ .
Local companies as well as companies from Austria, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Armenia were presented in the exhibition. Different regions of Georgia also were presented with the existing sanatoriums, boarding houses, holiday houses and health spas. The Mtskheta – Mtianeti Tourism center represented one of the exhibition boards that provided the visitors with lots of interesting information on tourist sites in Mtskheta-Mtianeti region.
The visitors at the exhibition were given the chance to establish business contacts with representatives of the companies, learn about the tourism potential of Georgia. The visitors also had an opportunity to plan their vocations as in Georgia as well as abroad. Such types of exhibitions will help to formulate the tourism market and infrastructure development in region.
International tourist exhibition
On April 13, the Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri visited Tserovani. The purpose of his visit was to see the construction work for the paper-producing factory located in the refugee community. The Prime Minister together with Tsezar Chocheli, the President’s Representative in Mtskheta- Mtianeti Region, on spot saw the current working process. He also was informed about the future plans, which will be realized after the completion of the construction work of the factory. The construction work of the paper factory is implemented by the “Neoprint” ltd. The owner of the “Neoprint” ltd received one million GL for the constriction by cheap credit program from the government. In the near future in particular in the middle of the May, approximately 150 displaced people from Akhalgori and Tserovani will get workplaces there. This will be the first paper producing factory in the South Caucasus that will produce local products using foreign material.

The Minister of Agriculture visited the “Natakhtari” Brewery
On April 16, the Minister of Agriculture visited the company “Natakhtari” that produces beer and lemonade. Bakur Kvezereli was toured the factory and talked to employees.
The Minister remarked that the government supports local commercial enterprise and makes all efforts to encourage it.
The Company “Natakhtari” was established in 2005 and today it provides both beer and lemonade for the local market. By the end of the year the company plans to sell 78 tons of beer and lemonade. The “Natakhtari” brewery also introduced a new product, called “Kasri”(“Barrel”).
Tha “Natakhtari” currently has 450 employees. Caesar Chocheli, the President’s Representative in Mtskheta - Mtianeti region accompanied the Minister of Agriculture on his visit.
Free medical examination for the refugees living in the village of Prezeti
On April 15, Alexander Kvitaishvili, the Minister of Labor, Health and Social protection, and Koba Subeliani, the Minister of Refugees and Resettlement, visited the village of Prezeti, Mtskheta Municipality where the number of displaced civilians moved after the Russian aggression. According to the program of the Health Ministry, the refugees living in the village of Prezeti received free medical examination. They were also given free vital medications. During the meeting with village citizens, Alexander Kvitaishvili and Koba Subeliani talked about solutions of problems that are most crucial to the resettled refugees. The Minister of Health gave a wheelchair to cerebrally handicapped boy, Dime Sabiashvili, age 9, a refugee from Akhalgori, and wished him recovery.
The Earth Day in Tserovani
On April 22, more then one million people in different countries of the world participated in the Earth Day event for the purpose of improving their own living environment.
Caucasus Environmental NGO Network (CENN) celebrated the “Earth Day” in Tserovani. This is the place were IDPs are settled. In the framework of this campaign was built a new playground for children. Many volunteers also joined this initiative. The event was held with the support of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
Many individuals and organizations expressed a desire to participate and create a safe and green environment for children. Mr. Goga Khachidze, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources and Mr. Koba Subeliani, Minister of Refugees and Resettlement participated in this event. CENN plans to continue to help the Tserovani community to establish orchards, build windbreaks, conduct training sessions on how to establish a community composting scheme, and work with the youth on “green” issues.
On April 23, George Vashadze, the chairman of the Civil Registry Agency of the Department of Justice of Georgia, Andria Urushadze, the Head of the Social Service Agency of the Ministry of Labor, Healthcare and Social Affairs and the President’s Representative in Mtskheta-Mtianeti Region delivered birth certificates and IDs to the socially unprotected Chonkadze family. The guests also had delivered food and sweets to the Chonkadze family. The chonkadze family lives in village Akhalubani Mtkheta municipality. Until that time four members of the Chonkadze family did not have IDs, while one of the children had no birth certificate.
In the shortest period, for each family member the Civil Registry of Mtskheta issued all required documents and IDs that were delivered by the Chairman of the Civil Registry Agency himself.
The assistance provided to the Chonkadze family is an example of the ongoing attention to families who are below the poverty line and in need. This family will join others who are currently being provided financial support by the government.
Chonkadze family problems solved
On April 28, by the initiative of U.S supported organization “Counterpart International, humanitarian Assistance program (CHAP) and non-governmental organization “Adamiani” was organized joint humanitarian action in Mtskheta in the park of House of Culture. In the framework of this action new wheelchairs and other humanitarian aids were delivered to the vulnerable disabled people. The above mentioned aids were donated to “Counterpart International” by the “Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Charities)”.
85 disabled people were gifted wheelchairs. Different organizations, which are supported by the U.S. Department of State, such as ACTS, IRD, Hellenicare and UMCOR delivered to the mostly needed families varies kind of assistance, among them: blankets, hygienic, school kits, and others. The ceremony of the delivery of wheelchairs was held in Mtskheta-Mtianeti region by the close collaboration of the State Representative – Governor Office. The representatives of U.S. Embassy in Georgia, donor organizations, the organization, which is supported by the U.S department of State and representatives of local government were attended this event.
May 12 – Fireman’s Professional Day
On May 12 was celebrated the Georgian Fireman’s Professional Day a “Fireman’s Day”. Therefore, by the joint work of the Department of Special Cases of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the International American Organization “Counterpart” was arranged a festive event for the personnel of the Fire Department of Mtskheta.
The representatives of the Department of Special cases expressed their gratitude and gave the Certificates of Honor (for devotion to the Fire Department) to those lifesavers who are distinguished with hard work and bravery. The representatives of the International American Organization “Counterpart” delivered special boots, sleeping bags, tents and hygiene sets for the firemen. It is also worth to remark that among the guests was Father Bidzina, the Deacon of St. George Church. He blessed their work and gave them a flag of St. George on behalf of the Patriarchy. Currently 63 people are employed in the Fire Department of Mtskheta. The representatives of Mtskheta- Mtianeti Governor and the local Municipality attended the event.
Regional Performing Arts Festival held in Dusheti
On May 22, the Performing Arts Festival talent contest was held in the House of Culture of Dusheti Municipality. The participants of the festival were those schoolchildren who received the highest scores in the contests held in their districts. The students from Kazbegi, Dusheti, Mtskheta and Tianeti schools performed songs (pop, folklore), dances, rhymes and sketches. The jury members who were the representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Culture and Sport evaluated the contestants. The Head of Dusheti Municipality gave certificates and prizes to the winners and wished them success in the future.
Water pipeline system rehabilitation in Tianeti
On May 14, the second stage of drinking water system rehabilitation works has started in Tianeti. New pipes were installed, while the old ones are still under repair. The project was financed by the central budget and the reconstruction work is implemented by “New Energy” LTD. The similar repair works are also conducted in those villages of Tianeti that have no water supply (such as Magraneti, Lelovani, Zhebota, Chabano, Kvernaula, Kvemo Orkhevi etc).
The completion of the project is due this autumn and the population in Tianeti will be provided with uninterrupted water supply before winter.
Natural calamity in Mtskheta - Mtianeti
Intensive rains inflicted a big damage to all Georgia as well as Mtskheta-Mtianeti Region. Several villages of Tianeti Municipality were flooded with water entering some houses. The access roads to the villages of Lishi and Artani are significantly damaged. The Iori River has damaged the dikes; therefore, there is a big threat that the river might flood the population of nearby villages. At this moment, some of Tianeti villages are left without electricity.
The same situation is on the territory of Dusheti Municipality as well. The main road is significantly damaged in the village of Gudamakari. As a result of heavy rains last night, the water got into the people’s houses in Dumatskho and the crops were destroyed.
For three days, the above-mentioned villages have lost electricity. The population is isolated. Ukanapshavi and Barisakho are left without power as well. A high voltage electricity post fell down nearby. As a result of heavy rains, the Aragvi River rose making the reconstruction work difficult.
The heavy rainfall from June 13 until June15 ruined an electricity post in Stepantsminda. Near the Kanobi Bridge, the Tergi River flooded and posed a threat to the road. The access road to the village was also damaged. In the Trusso Valley as a result of a landslide, some parts of Kasari road require maintenance. Kazbagi District power supply was later restored after being interrupted.
On July 8, the final meeting of the championship 2009 of the National Boxing Federation of Georgia was held in the newly renovated sport hall of Dusheti Municipality. The competitors were those sportsmen born in 1995-96. The above-mentioned competition started in Dusheti on July 4 and will be finished on July 8. The main prize is Vazha-Pshavela Cup. The sportsmen from almost every region of Georgia participated in the championship. The competition was held in 16 weight categories. 18 first, 18 second and 36 third places were revealed between 34kg to 76kg categories. Petre Tsiskarishvili, the Chairman of the Boxing Federation, David Namgalauri, Chairman of the Department of Sport and Youth and the representatives of the local government, attended the final meeting in Dusheti. The championship ended successfully and the sportsmen taking the first place received special prizes on behalf of the Administration of Mtskheta –Mtianeti State Representative. The Georgian Boxing Championship will be held in Dusheti annually and will become a tradition soon.
